Why was the discovery of Cynognathus fossils in South America and Africa significant to Alfred Wegener?

Wegener proposed that continents drifted over time and that South America and Africa were once connected (along with the rest of the continents) in a single supercontinent known today as Pangea. The discovery of Cynognathus fossils in Africa and South America provided evidence that the two areas had once been linked by land as this animal certainly couldn't have swam across the Atlantic ocean.
