Why did achilles die when in fact he was considered as an imortal?

He wasn't immortal; he was invulnerable except for the spot on his heel where his mother held him when she dipped him in the river Styx. This was actually a fairly late addition to the myth - the earliest source for it is a poem written in the first century AD. Homer shows that he could be wounded.
