Why does Serena Williams get the same prize money as Rafael Nadal?

I don't understand either. The maximum number of sets for a woman to win a grand slam is 21. The maximum number of sets for a man to win a grand slam is 35. I am all for equality, but those numbers just don't add up for equal pay.
